Block based theme vs. page builders – coming from page builder land I try to understand block

[ad_1]

I try hard to understand if block based themes could make any sense to me. I see many web designers move over to block based themes, e.g. Neve with Otter blocks, Generate Press with Generate Blocks, Kadence theme with Kadence blocks, Blocksy theme with Qubely blocks.

It seems most of the block based themes use some other block plugin and there are a lot of others out there, e.g Stackable, Spectra, Greenshift, etc.

I am not sure what I should think of it, that I need a separate block plugin for the theme.

All those Gutenberg block plugins look quite similar to me, but somehow I am missing the flexibility of page builders (obviously I am more experienced with page builders).

e.g. it seems instead of working with containers and gaps, I must work with spacer widgets. That alone turns me off a lot. There are others things, but I don’t want to make the post too long at first

I feel in page builder land I can do whatever I like, in block based themes I must deal with what the block offer. And that exactly also interests me, because the limitation can be good to be more efficient.

For instance, if the theme offers me full-width, wide, normal, narrow for the page layout and nothing else, it’s perhaps also easier to get a consistent layout. In page builders, I might work with classes I apply to sections and do math calculations for the paddings.

Blocks look to me a bit like Wix – you have your set of tools, and that’s about it

That shouldn’t be a battle, I just try to understand better
