  1. Explain what you mean by “custom” downloads. What is custom about them? Any more info about how you’d like this to work would help.

  2. The answer is yes.

    To extrapolate on that:
    – I would totally advise to have your own website to sell from instead of or as well as other platforms like Etsy because then you won’t have to stress over them with-holding payments/ close your account down for nothing.
    – Whether you specifically can depends on either your skill set or budget.

As you say you know WP well, I’d give it a go – if nothing you’ll learn loads.

  3. >I would like to sell custom digital downloads to people. How would I do this with WordPress?

    Easy Digital Downloads.

  4. Sure you can. But you need to look more at the point of Etsy, because when you break away from Etsy you no longer have the traffic that Etsy brings – you have to generate that traffic yourself. If you just build a store and throw it online, nobody is going to find it. It’ll be on you to do *all* of the marketing and advertising. While you do need to do a lot of that with Etsy still, Etsy has a ton of people just browsing their platform and you will lose out on all that traffic. Etsy is a bit more than just a place that lets you sell stuff, it also brings you customers. So you need to look at the pros and cons from that aspect as well.

  5. That’s the issue. WordPress can do it but then you’re responsible for security, maintenance and setup.

Etsy has the advantage of a market and easier to setup.

You build your site with wordpress and then no one can find you.

It’s only worth it if you hire an agency.

Even then I would suggest creating an Etsy account for the market.

  6. First off, answer this:

Do you get most of your current customers through Etsy traffic? Or from direct promotion you yourself do (social media, advertising, etc)?

  7. WordPress becomes worth it when the extra earnings from owning your entire own store exceeds the cost of: hosting, maintenance, security, marketing (to attract your own customers), etc.

Not worth it if you’re just starting out. Worth it if you’re established and want to grow margins long-term.
