Do i need subdomain for setting up WP transactional email?

Hey all,

Nothing too important but just wanted to get the general thoughts on using subdomain or not for SMTP setup.

I’ll be using FluentSMTP + Brevo currently for transactional emails for my clients. All of my clients use an exteral service like 0365 or Gworkspace for their emails (info@domain)

My question is, when I setup the smtp and sender domain, should i user info@domain or somethingelse@domain or [email protected]

just wanted to know what would be best for overall reputation and easiness and futureproofing etc cheers

  1. Good question. For typical small volume cases you’re ok with using your main domain but do make sure to use a subdomain for the “return-path” or bounce domain so you can make sure you can setup SPF correctly and ensure DMARC works.

However, using a subdomain for the from domain and sending domain does offer benefits for larger organizations or if you’re very concerned about security. You can potentially setup stricter DMARC, manage reputation separately, etc… It allows for “strict” alignment.

  2. Sub domain for mail send is a good idea. You’re better off configuring mailgun to handle your smtp on your subdomain. Worth every penny, and it literally costs pennies.
