Hi,
I built my first websites using the WordPress Block Editor. I tested both, GeneratePress and Kadence (premium theme with premium blocks plugin) since these two are the most recommended themes as far as I noticed.
Now I am wondering why so many people cheer for GeneratePress. GenerateBlocks Pro just adds a few additional blocks to the editor. KadenceBlocks adds a lot more blocks. Since I don't see other advantages of GeneratePress at a glance, do I oversee something?
GeneratePress adds extra functionality while still being minimal. Kadence exposes a lot more configuration and options in the GUI, reducing the need for custom CSS or JS code.
The reason so many people cheer for GeneratePress is largely due to its performance, lightweight design, and flexibility. GeneratePress is known for its clean code, which makes websites load faster, and this is important for both user experience and SEO. While it may not offer as many blocks as Kadence, its focus is more on speed and optimization rather than quantity. Also, the theme is highly customizable, with lots of options for developers to tweak without bloating the site. So, if you’re looking for performance and a solid foundation, GeneratePress stands out in that regard.
imo:
Kadence: more user friendly, probably a better choice for non technical users
GeneratePress: a better option in general for more advanced and customized projects
Generate Press + Generate Blocks authors made clearly a choice to keep things as lightweight as possible. All themes devs say their theme is “lightweight” but GP is one of the few that actually keeps that promise in classic themes
As a developer I never used a better commercial theme than Generate Press. But of course even if that’s the best one in terms of performance it doesn’t mean you should always use it
For a dev generate press in its backend has lots of useful php functions available for use, and these help a lot in keeping everything consistent
Not sure in terms of pure performance (I mean out of the box, without any optimization) which one between these 2 is better
To test this accurately we would need to build 2 identical websites with these tools only, without any additional 3rd party code of any kind.
But this isn’t the only metric to consider in this case (since none of the 2 is a disaster in terms of performance) the dev process also plays a role in the budget required for the project + in some scenarios a lot of extra customization options would never be used and in that case less is more
In the projects I work on there’s always a lot of PHP and custom functionality, they’re never static websites
Probably someone who builds lots of regular sites and has extensive experience with both can share more insight
Have used Kadence on a 100+ sites and am a huge fan of its simplicity and integration with WP. It doesn’t get enough love here.
There’s several things to unpack here, each have a theme and a plugin component. Is kadence BLOCKS more comprehensive than generate BLOCKS, yes. Better…that’s a matter of priorities.
But generatepress THEME vs kadence THEME is a wash. Either is pretty good, if you’re into that type of theme. I actually prefer generatepress, but just because I think it provides a better developer experience.
