Hi, this might seem like a silly post but I really want to learn how to use WordPress so please don’t hate on me.
I am pretty new to WordPress and in web development in general. I want to create a website where I can post stuff and other people too, so it would need a nice login page. In addition, I would like to make a “popular” section where the most viewed posts appear. I tried to watch tutorials but they just seem to find a template and tweak it a little bit. I can’t even find how to modify the width of the website or things like the placement of objects.
I would like to ask you guys how long did it take you to learn WP enough to make a simple website like what I have described? (I’m just trying to find how difficult is what I want to do) Is there any important stuff I should be learning first? I would appreciate any tips!

Well, what you described is not simple it is an intermediate project. However, since you are new to WordPress I will suggest you go the premium theme route.
Youtube is your friend if you want to learn WordPress. There are many courses and tutorials to help you both understand how plugins and themes work as well as how to code specifically for WP.
I’d recommend you to first learn how to set up a local server, what are plugins and themes and go on from there.
I remember when I started learning WordPress back in the summer of 2011. It took me one month to understand what WordPress is and all the elements it includes. After that, it took a few more months to fully master all the topics, primarily support-related ones, as I was searching for the “perfect” tools for us, mainly free ones. By the end of the year, I had acquired everything needed to be much more comfortable working with WordPress.
Some free WP tutorial sites (e.g. like WPBeginner) helped me a lot in that learning process, so I decided to collect all those [free WP tutorials](https://www.reddit.com/r/WordPress_org/comments/147qits/wordpressfriendly_trainings_for_beginners/) to help my wife in that learning process, and afterward for our clients as well. I hope they can be of use to you, too!
