Is it possible to use the Jetpack plugin without an Automattic account?

I have been hearing that the Jetpack plugin for WordPress(.org) requires a WordPress.com account to function. Since the plugin is open-source (or so Automattic says), is it possible to self host the Jetpack server/required program and not use a [Wordpress.com](https://wordpress.com/) account? I haven’t tested any of this myself as I want to use WordPress with the Jetpack plugin, and servers are pretty expensive for me right now.
