Look at “Allow users to hide their profiles from directory” = enable
and “Hide profiles from directory by default” = No
both at UM Settings -> General -> Account

Ah, I had the whole privacy tab disabled so could not see any of those options, I enabled it and it allowed me to see and set the “Hide profiles from directory by default” option to no and then I disabled the tab again and it still works. Tricky, think that option needs a re-work IYAM.
