I applied for a WordPress Developer job opportunity. However, I received a rejection letter. So I wrote back to thank them for taking time to review my resume and replying back and so on.. I also asked them for feedback so that I can improve in any areas that might be lacking..
The HR replied saying that I was passed over due to lack of experience in Vue.js in WordPress, PHP, etc. The thing is that I do know how to code WordPress from scratch in PHP. Does it make any difference in knowing only coding WordPress in PHP and the complete PHP language? Is there any way I can acknowledge it in my resume?
That was literally in my resume:
>*TECHNOLOGIES*
>*Javascript, HTML, CSS, Flexbox, Firebase, Google Platform, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Bootstrap, Reactjs, jQuery, GitHub, Visual Studio Code, Slack, Trello, Adobe InDesign, MongoDB, Nodejs, Expressjs*

I don’t see PHP or vue.js
A lot of people doing hiring – especially at the HR level – don’t know what they are doing.
In addition to what’s been said, instead of just ‘WordPress’ (which for all they know means you know how to mess around with builders like Elementor), consider putting ‘WordPress Development’.
They want a full-stack web developer AND designer. They’re looking for a “unicorn”.
Basically, if you don’t have well medicated/managed ADHD or some kind of obsession you aren’t getting this job.
I use all of these technologies (and more: DevOps, sysadmin, networking (cisco equipment mostly), security systems and hardening, etc.) regularly. Though, I use AWS for cloud infra and have no need for firebase. I’m also a senior full-stack dev, run my own agency, and have been doing this for more than a decade professionally and have dabbled in programming since I was around 10 (launched first public website at age 12 in PHP on apache). Before that I started computing on DOS in the early nineties as a four year old 🤷♂️
Chances are they’re also beggars about the pay scale and are being unrealistic about the title to try and neg you into a lesser deal (junior/mid, FE/BE, etc). It’s also indicative of an HR department hearing about buzz words and trying to stack five jobs onto a single person’s shoulders for efficiencies. Did you interview with an HR rep or did they have a team lead or management present?
The job market is desperate enough they may have just found a candidate slightly better than you who was willing to take a pay cut post-layoff / firing, so you probably aren’t far off skills wise. Though, with competition out there so tight you may want to familiarize yourself with a front end framework or few to add selling points to your resume.
Alternatively, they may end up looking for forever, never filling the position, and then looking back at resumes post-reality-check. I’ve seen callbacks like that happen as well.
Good luck. Keep your head up 👍
You have to have a portfolio and github with examples of your work.
You have to show them you can do the work.
You need multiple examples of your work that are applicable to the job you are applying for.
Imagine someone hiring you, paying you, expecting you to work immediately.
They aren’t hiring anybody just because they wrote some words on a resume.
WordPress is such a massive platform, used in many different ways, they are going to be careful with their hiring process.
Coding WordPress themes is the most basic PHP. You could never get a PHP developer job with just WordPress experience.
When you ask for feedback you should also ask how many applicants they had. Tell them you are trying to understand the job market.
I don’t know what the rest of your resume looks like, but never have just a list of technologies like that. You need to do the connecting for them. Have projects and explain what technology you used.
Just because you add a list of skills to your resume it doesn’t mean anything; like maybe you just watched a YouTube video on it then added it to your list. The languages have to be in your work experience with proven results. Like used Vue to do this thing and the benefit to the business was such and such big number increase.
