Seeking Clarification on Copyright Issues with WordPress Website

[ad_1]

I’m reaching out for some guidance regarding a copyright issue that has arisen in my work recently. I’ve been accused by a client of copying her website to create a similar one for another client. Both websites were built using WordPress, and the themes and plugins utilized are open source, freely available resources commonly used in the WordPress ecosystem. Even not all of them are same. The content of the websites are not same too, as both of them are their personal websites.

Despite my attempts to explain this to my client, she remains convinced that I have infringed upon her copyright. I believe that since we used open source themes and plugins, there shouldn’t be any copyright violation.

I’m seeking advice on how to handle this situation. Are there any specific legal considerations I should be aware of when using open source resources in website development? How can I effectively communicate this to my client and potentially resolve the issue?

Even she is claiming she has the copyright of the code which she took from our country’s copyright office, which is breeching of opensource copyright. Sadly she and our country’s copyright office, none of them are aware of how open source works. Now what’d I do?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anyone faced any situation like this? Thank you in advance for your help.

I have the link to both sites, both of them are online, so anyone can check. Not sharing now, will provide if needed.

  1. This sounds more just like an annoyance and not even an issue. I mean, I don’t mean to belittle it, yes it is an issue for you, but I don’t think there is legally anything that she can do. So many websites nowadays are basically the same lol. It’s just graphics, textual content and color pallete that makes them look different.

I would honestly just ignore her for now. Save any email correspondance and don’t talk to her on the phone or inperson.

Is she threatening legal action? Even if she is, is she really going to pay for lawyers over this and if she did, she doesn’t have a case. What does she want you to do? Take the other site down?

What annoying person to have to deal with, that sucks.
