Should I invest my time learning a framework or stick with WordPress?

I’ve been working as a freelance doing WordPress for 3 years. Recently, I broke up with the marketing guy I worked with and can’t find freelance work. There is a limit amount of WordPress work in my area, so I am thinking about to switch into the “real” webdev by learning a modern framework.

The problem is that am I giving up my previous experience? If a find a job with other frameworks, am I starting with zero again? How much work am I expected to do between learning modern framework and getting a job?

Any suggestions? Thank you.

  1. If you have limited work in your area, why not consider remote work?

If you want to expand your experience to frameworks without abandoning WordPress, why not try developing a headless WordPress site using a framework?

  2. Why not pick up a PHP framework such as Laravel? That way you can leverage it’s knowledge when working with WordPress?

  3. A few things:
    1. Location doesn’t limit projects, not in 2023
    2. WordPress is a skill set and a REAL one too, if people say otherwise forget them. HTML, CSS and JavaScript alone as a foundation in WordPress allows you to have carryover skills. I think folks just hate WordPress dominates the web, but it allows for persons of any skill level to use it for different reasons.
    3. Nothing wrong with learning new stuff, it’ll only make you more marketable and might be able to even integrate it into WordPress if you so desire.

  4. Yes, I think WordPress is getting left behind. Php will always be around but the front end gets so slow.

I would learn a headless CMS. Strapi is open source and you could learn any front end like Nuxt or React. Lots of great tutorials. Also SvetleKit but that is less popular in the programming world.

No matter what you should learn to work remotely so you aren’t limited by your location.
