Why is the site changing when I open

I created a site on WordPress using a template (free version) and all was working fine. Then my friend, who owns the site, wanted someone else to make some changes and all worked fine. I later went in to tweak some pages and everything reverted back to when I first created the site and all new changes from the other person were lost. What happened and how do I prevent this from happening again?
