Am I alone? I **dread** it when WP updates turn up. My site works fine, but every year my theme gets that little bit older. And we all know, computers/servers work wonderfully over and over and over and over… it’s when something changes that sh\*t happens.
I do the back-up and then, heart in mouth, I press the update button. Which, I am about to do… now…

So far, so good…! PHEW!
This might be your cue to learn some PHP and figure out where the WP debug log is/how to enable it.
Using less janky plugins and themes also mitigates a lot of issues.
At least you create restore points before letting Jesus take the wheel.
I always wait at least a week before updating a new WordPress version. Sometimes, even until at 0.1 version arrives with bug fixes.
Incremental updates are usually okay.
But for major updates, wait and check the WordPress forums first for possible problems.
It’s annoying to have the reminder on your dashboard. But not as annoying as having your site crash.
Don’t be in a rush, because everything will work fine without updating.
And, always, always, update your staging or sanbox site first. Never jump in with you live site.
This is why you set up a staging site, with an identical setup, and test updates there first. Blindly updating things on a live site is a great way for things to randomly break, cause unecessary downtime and even lost income if you’re running a business.
Most hosts have an option to create a staging site.
The flurry of updates for plugins is great this time around.
That’s probably a good thing.
I keep multiple automated backups via different methods and different places. So, I’m not too worried.
I have to do it that way, because my bandwidth is definitely lacking.
