Adding new URLs in posts not using prependHTTPS

[ad_1]

So creating a post and then highlighting a section of words and select ‘link’ and type a domain name and entering, it only adds http://domain.com opposed to https://
Of I type a full url with the https it leaves it but the default auto completion is to http, not https.
This was being discussed heavily and looked to have been sorted on GitHub by the developers converting PrependHTTP to PrependHTTPS in a js file but even with the latest WP update the issue is still there.
Yes site is on SSL and has been for years.
Default URLs are https format.
Yes the redirects are in place (redirects kind of suck though as search engines spider sites and see the http in the code regardless of whether it will show up as https when clicked) tested and proven by Ahrefs finding them all and listing them as errors.
Suggestions?
