I was able to create the wanted behavior by adding a CSS class to the advertisement.
The procedure is described here for our post list placement, but is similar to the AdSense in-feed placement. Please add blog-layout-1 to the ad’s container classes.

CSS is the styling language for your website. By assigning the same styling class from your blog posts to the ad, it will adapt the blog’s layout.
To illustrate the steps needed to integrate the CSS class to the ad as described in the manual above, I recorded a short video:
