All my websites are also affected. Just removed the plugin with ftp access. Hope there is a fix being worked on. But the question remains whether the plugin has been sufficiently tested in version 4.0?
Just had the same thing on one of my sites. Deactivated the plugin through recovery mode and things returned to normal.
My other site is still on 3.1x and obviously no issues. Was there an announcement about 4.0? Don’t see it on the changelog. Wonder if it slipped out?
you can just rename the folder of backwpup to _backwpup by ftp to desactivate the plugin
I just restored the prior version of plugin and now all works as it should.
same here, fatal error.

We really sorry about the issue happened with the free 4.0 version, there is something wrong during building the free package that lead to the issue.
We have reverted the plugin to previous 3.10.0 version and will release the new free version in the next few days.
In case you got issue, please remove the backwpup folder wp-content/plugins and then install the current version(3.10.0) again.
Thank you and we really sorry about the issue.
Download the latest 3.10.0 here: https://projectdmc.org/plugins/backwpup/
@kpbryce132. I have tried that but the plugins page still tells then that BackWPup is on version 4.0.0 (which is not true). To me this seems not safe. Therefore I disabled the plugin and placed the original 4.0.0 “backwpup” directory (which I had temporarily named to _backwpup) back awaiting for a fix.
