Alternatives to S3 for a staff managed website?

[ad_1]

I’ve built a local news organizations website using wordpress so that the non-technical staff can do daily posts.
We use a cheapo host that does not serve media very quickly. Therefore we use \`WP Offload Media Lite\` together with a free-tier amazon S3 instance. It’s pretty nice since it doesnt change the process of uploading media at all (staff still just upload to the Media Library, they actually have no idea that this plugin is in use)
However I’m hearing on this subreddit that the data egress costs for S3 are ‘exorbitant’. I’d eventually also like to upload our news soundbytes and hour-long discussion audio this way. That is currently handled by a premium soundcloud account. I don’t like the visual bloat of soundcloud though, and it’s much more involved for the staff to upload this way than it would be to also upload to the media library.
Basically, if the costs are so high what should we be using instead? WordPress plug-in support is also basically mandatory as well.
