Anyone spending a lot of time and energy into a project that most likely won’t be worth all the effort?

I recently starting a mini WordPress project, nothing new and nothing difficult but because I’m a complete beginner it takes me hours to do the simplest things like putting together a header and footer lol. But I know the site won’t end up being worth all the effort in the end and I wonder why am I even spending any energy on it at all.

Does anyone else also feel like this?

  1. If it’s a hobby project treat it as such. Doodling, learning, and gaining experience isn’t a waste. Think about it as entertainment, treat it as such, and you’ll have a great time.

It’s like watching a movie. Watching a movie while you’re having fun? Awesome. Forcing yourself to watch it for 8hrs straight? Probably not awesome.

If you were doing this for someone else or a profit, it’s another story.

  2. That’s fine while you are new and learning.

One it’s second nature you’ll be looking for ways to do it even faster.

More experience means more projects so one working out doesn’t matter all that much.

You are gaining experience, applying knowledge and optimizing a workflow that will allow you to build solid projects efficiently.

It’s an investment that takes time to pay. Even if a handful of project weren’t worth it”

It helps to know the nitty gritty because once an idea does fit with a market you’ll basic be doing the same thing as when you were a beginner… sending lots of time on a project. This time making it better.

  3. The “good” news is that over time I’ve gotten fast enough at building sites that I can almost get away with blocking out the entire site while putting together my proposals. But no, I usually don’t let the client know.

  4. I have lots of personal projects. I learned something every time.

Even a codepen project is worth it.

  5. I did it. I had a niche site in my industry and I thought it could be something of value. It never did much, but I also didn’t put a ton of work into it. I had the content, but it was just an okay site and no one cared. It happens. I did most of the work while on a road trip, so it wasn’t a giant waste of time since I couldn’t do much else on that trip. At least I wasn’t bored.

You are, however, honing skills. That is not wasted.

  6. Ah yes I know the feeling. Make a portfolio of your work, whatever your field is. Better to have it already set up than have someone asking to see your portfolio and having to rush make one

  7. I think you’re asking the wrong question.

“Do I feel like that?” NO.

But if you are asking, should you be doing this, then here’s what I think:

If you actually want to get into this field. Then it’s worth it. Because what you’re feeling is the absolute base of learning anything in tech.

At first, everything seems overwhelming and takes you an eternity for the simplest of the things.

But then gradually you become good at it, and it starts to become simple. And then people ask you, how could you do it so fast, when I can’t.

So if you have free time, and want to get into this field eventually, then it’s the best way to learn by doing the actual stuff.

The rest is up to you!
