As a jr web dev that has started to learn WP, would you say it’s beneficial to continue learning it?

Hi, so I don’t have a lot of professional experience with web development but for some years now i’ve learned some about it and found I have quite the passion for it.

I got contracted for a company a while ago as a web dev. The company uses WP, and is hosted by WP Engine (lol)

Now before being hired here I really didn’t know anything about WP, but since then I’ve found it to be a good tool for building websites and have been learning about how to make a custom theme, plugins, etc. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it too.

But all the drama lately has got me worrying if maybe learning all these things may be obsolete in the near future.

Perhaps I’m being paranoid, but is learning WP development worth it currently? Or should I focus my time and effort on learning other ways to develop websites?

  1. Drastic things might happen, but it’s not going to be obsoleted overnight. The worst case scenarios would still involve a long slow decline, and any forks emerging from the project would obviously be very similar to WP so your experience would carry over.

It’s the largest CMS in the World, and it’s still growing quicker than all its competitors. It powers websites like Meta, Samsung, NASA, etc. and it’s likely going to outlive you.

So is it worth learning? Yes. Without a doubt. It’s the most important CMS by far.

  3. Oh man getting sick of all this, every post i see here is people whinging, over exaggerating. Bro WordPress going nowhere. I’m outta here.

  4. Learn as much as you can.

Don’t be afraid to get involved in PHP as you’ll be able to transfer some of those skills to other frameworks and platforms.

PHP would be a solid language to pick up, it’s come a long way since v5.
