Automattic Departure Day

[ad_1]

Since today’s the day Matt told them to make their decision, figured it would be good to pull all public departure info together.

Comment ones you see and I’ll add them in!

Mods feel free to delete if you want this in the megathread but imo this stands on its own.

  1. Am I the only worried that Matt’s behavior is going to harm WordPress in the long term?

It’s normal that people change jobs, but if enough people who have held a position for years suddenly leave at once, that can be very problematic.

  2. Last I saw it was ~54 people, 6 months or $30k, whichever was greater, insurance through October 31, and maybe get to keep equipment.

Not everyone will want to be public, but I am curious to see who’s leaving because it’ll be a pretty good vibe check on the overall health.

  3. I am a lowly contributor, I have decided not to commit anything until .org is separated from Matt. It should be with the foundation (a foundation without Matt). My time is precious to me to spend coding for Matt for free!

  4. Josepha Haden Chomphosy’s role in WordPress has been a giant conflict of interest. She has the been the Executive Director of WordPress and “also leads Automattic‘s open source division.” She wasn’t voted by the community or approved by a board to be the Executive Director role. Matt Mullenweg [just gave her the role](https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2019/01/16/expanding-wordpress-leadership/). Of course when he announced that, he didn’t mention her role at Automattic.

She also failed to put out the conflict of interest policy [she said was coming in 2021](https://www.pluginvulnerabilities.com/2024/09/18/wordpress-was-going-to-have-a-conflict-of-interest-policy-it-never-was-released/) (alongside a code of ethics that never came either).

  5. I’m low key surprised we haven’t seen the entire automattic legal department appear on this list yet.
