Backing up before updating ?

[ad_1]

When you get this warning from a plugin what is the main porpose ?

I never had any bugs ocurring after an update but if it happened what is the best action ?

Is the main reason just so you don’t have downtime in your website in case it gets bugged ?

Should I just revert back to the backup and stay with the plugin not updated ? What if it never gets fixed or if it is a major security update ?

Can’t I just fix the page or build it again even if it is bugged ?

I am just wondering what is the best practice in case this ever happens.

Sorry if the question is dumb, this is coming from a non-dev just trying to understand it better.

  1. The aim is to let you know that things may break for any reason, if things break, you revert to your last backup and you’re website is functional again.

What you’re asking is a good reason to have a development server to try updating stuff and take your time to fix the website if anything breaks.

  2. When you update, you are asked to back-up, which serves as a back-up that helps your site go back up if the site breaks or doesn’t work properly after the update.

If the plugin update doesn’t work for you, you fix your issue or change the plugin, but only after you get your site back up using the backup.

You can always create your site back from scratch if you ignored the backup notice and did not backup. It’s your choice to backup or build again from scratch. With no back-up, you won’t be able to get back a website with lots of content.

The best practice is to maintain backups. If you break your site without a back-up, there’s no alternative other than building it from scratch (or check if your hosting company has a backup).

Sorry if the answer is dumb.
