Hi, I’m not a web developer, just a dentist wanting to make a custom site for my practice. I have some experience making a website. Years ago I made one through a program call Xara by Magix and used that for a few years. That one was fully customizable and I was able to edit it like I want. Yesterday, I signed up for the Business plan on WordPress, (the dot com version), and tried to make changes to a template. It won’t let me edit much, such as the colors or the location of text blocks. Am I supposed to be downloading plugins? Or is this just how WordPress is and editing is very limited? I’m completely new to this but so far this seems like it’s very limiting. I didn’t know if this is typical or if there a lot of plug-ins or other things I have to download. I’ve tried emailing support, but haven’t gotten a response. The chat option wasn’t available yesterday. So far, this has been incredibly frustrating.
I had a website company before but their renewal fee for the following year was just as much as the initial year with the cost of the website. They seemed like scammers so I had to drop them pretty quickly because they were asking for me to renew for another year or lose the site. Right now I have no site but want to get something up quickly myself if I can.
Any help is appreciated.

I don’t have any experience with [wordpress.com]), but it does have certain limitations, depending on the plan. You might try to install another theme which will have the settings or look that you like.
Self-hosted WordPress ([wordpress.org](https://wordpress.org)) has pretty much no limitations, but you would have to be willing to learn something and devote some time. For me, it is interesting and not difficult, in fact I enjoy it very much, but not everyone must share such interests.
If you plan to be serious about maintaining your own site, maybe you should give it a try. It is not difficult, but as I said, you would need to devote a little time.
