Best domain name registrar?

[ad_1]

Hello! I run a web development agency that focuses on WordPress sites, typically for small to mid-sized businesses.

Typically we encourage our customers to host their sites on WP Engine or SiteGround, and when they need advice on a domain registrar, typically we’ve recommended Google Domains, if they’re not just getting it through SiteGround.

However, with Google Domains being sunsetted and moving over to Squarespace, I’m wondering who the best domain name registrar is. I’ve never really had strong feelings on the subject, other than primarily wanting to suggest a platform that’s easy to use, and priced well.

I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions on domain registrars, and why you recommend them?

Along with this, I’m curious if there are any implications with regards to any being easier when it comes to email set up or other IT aspects, like working well with Google Workspace or Office 365, that sort of thing. We usually don’t get in the weeds with email setup or that sort of thing for our clients, but don’t want to lead them down the wrong path.

For the actual web hosting, I’m anticipating we’ll continue suggesting WP Engine or SiteGround, unless anyone has strong suggestions on other options. But, I’m primarily curious about the domain registrar.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Been using Tierra.net for 15+ years. I have no affiliation with them. They are US based which is why I went with them back then.

  2. [https://porkbun.com/])
I’ve been using them for years. They have great pricing, a very simple, fast, and functional user interface, nice APIs you can use to manage things if you’re into scripting, and I’ve never had a single issue with them.

  3. People around here love to shit om godaddy, but as a sysadmin who has to work with DNS zone files all day long, I can confidently tell you that godaddy DNS updates faster than almost anybody except AWS route53. They’re my top choice personally.

  4. I like CloudFlare Domains for most common TLDs. Namecheap was always good, porkbun is fun.

  5. Namecheap.com for me. Point the NS to a free Cloudflare account and you’re good to go.

  6. This post is a bit scary to me.

Cloudflare is the cheapest and fastest domain registrar on earth. They also offer an insane level of tools and features for free that allow you to do things none other do.

This isn’t an objective opinion thing. You can see benchmarks here [https://www.dnsperf.com/]) and Cloudflare only charges the registry fees that they pay.

  7. Google Domains works great for me. Stay away from GoDaddy. They’re shady AF.

  8. Wrong…. Question should have been “Worst domain name registrar?”

    My answer – Go Daddy….

  9. FWIW, [WordPress.com]) has an offer right now where they will pay the cost of the extra year of registration for any domains transferred from Google Domains. Renewal prices have also dropped to essentially what Google was charging.

I know folks on this sub have OPINIONS on hosting with [WordPress.com]) (I don’t tend to share those opinions). But regardless of that, it’s a stable legitimate company that would be a fine registrar with none of the weirdness that GoDaddy or others try to pull with pricing/fees. You don’t have to host there, just use [WordPress.com]) as a registrar and point your domains wherever you like.

  10. I started using CloudFlare since I run everything through there anyone. Decent pricing etc.

  11. Cloudflare for Domains. Cloudways for hosting. I’m grandfathered in and can still use Vultr High frequency servers though.

  12. Since I, like sooooo many others, now how to move everything from google domains I’ve settled on cloudflare. We’ll see how it goes, but I’ve been more than satisfied with all their other services.

As for hosting, siteground and WPengine are both top notch. I personally use cloudways, but the primary driver was economy of scale. If clients are getting their own hosting the other two are easier. For personal sites I have everything on vultr…but that’s a different discussion.
