Best practices for staging to production deployments on WordPress?

[ad_1]

Hi everyone,

I’m currently actively developing a WordPress site (theme modifications, trying out plugins, etc). For that reason, I’ve been working up to now in a development environment. Initially I was using Local WP and then pushing to the cloud. Now I’m using Cloudways and doing staging to production pulls every few days.

I read here yesterday that this kind of staging workflow is discouraged because it involves repetitively overwriting the production database which can lead to corruption (or something along those lines).

All that sounds reasonable to me but has me asking: so what are you supposed to do instead?

I really like being able to use the staging environment to play around with things like changing CSS stylings and just the website generally. So I would like to stick with the approach if possible. Of course some “content” is created too. But right now there’s more work to be done in the realm of other “things”.

TIA
