Hi y’all,
I have been running a [fanpage for comic legend Bryan Talbot]) for 27 years now… – yes, I did start it in 1996 and I have run it ever since. It has literally given me a career and led to me meeting my wife – but that’s another story…
As you can imagine over that amount of time, it is massive: just thousands of pages. I have been meaning to convert it into a CMS site for literally over a decade, but the thought of manually importing all of those pages into a CMS has always scared me.
Also, I always verbalised the concept of bringing the site into a CMS as “importing” it… – which WordPress uses to convey the concept of “importing the database that is exported by another instance of WordPress” and not the concept that I actually needed of “go grab this other site that is already live on the web and bring it into WordPress.”
So just recently I realised what I actually needed was the concept of scraping a site to bring it into WordPress… – so I started looking around for scraping WP plugins, and was met by the usual avalanche of plugins that superficially seemed OK – but which then requested payment to import anything except a single page, or that were no longer supported, or which had terrible, scathing reviews.
So I thought I’d come over here and ask the Reddit WP people – what scraping plugins would you actually use and pay for to import an image-rich site with over 2,500 pages?
