I have been freelancing for past 10 years and can confidently say I can get most of the websites projects done with skills I acquired over the years. Today I checked out upwork after 5 years and got some connects but OMG wordpress upwork gets 50+ proposals in 2 minutes and bidding wars get outrageous. It had like 106,101, 100, 90 connects as top 4 (I bought upwork plus); that's like all of my connects(!) are there any better ways to break out of this finding gigs loop?
I have multiple sources locally but the cost doesn't feel justified as per the work asked anymore. Like sometimes it's ridiculously low and competitive at worse deliverables. Most clients end up getting bamboozled as developers/designers phrase their sentences smartly and exclude obvious things that client will come asking for. Then they charge for it as extra cost (which I find as an unethical practice). You might as well charge client properly and maintain good relations and help them with their businesses in a way that serves both parties interest but no one does.
It was good for college pocket money to say yes to low paying projects but the sources keep shrinking. Kinda disheartened tbh. Are there any better platforms/ways to expand my reach? I really dont prefer jobs and would like a pure freelancing gig as my main source.

you might find some luck on Freelancer, Fiverr, and Toptal, these platforms offer a variety of freelance opportunities worldwide

Please Please, I am seeing a lot more of these posts. This is not a job board and career sub. Please this is how subs go down very quickly and very fast, where the next thing you know. The whole world is looking for a job or offering their services.
You might have better luck applying for the higher quality sites (Codeable, Toptal, etc) where you might not have as much competition to contend with. There’s also a list of other options below:
