What's the consensus on installing Better Search and Replace, a WPEngine plugin, on non-WPE hosted sites? In light of the saga. Thanks for insight.

WP Engine isn’t doing anything here, except suing Matt and Automattic, which is fair since they did this after Matt acted like a dick and broke stuff. Customers and non-customers are perfectly ok by them. It’s just Matt that is taking it out on everyone and pretending like it wasn’t the plan to do that anyways. (Hint: part of the lawsuit is Matt basically threatening to do what he is currently doing)
There is no problem installing and using WPE-owned plugins.
The only problem with installing WPE-owned plugins is that to be able to get the next updated version you will need to download a patched version from WPE directly, as they do not have access to the .org servers. Once you have that patched version, future updates will be automatic. Read up on how the ACF update happened.
