My question is sort of a generic one, to what degree would fuller-feature plugins affect the speed of a website? I'm needing a members area plugin for a community site that I'm doing. I've tested 'Simple Memberships' which is good and seems to fit the bill. However there are other more popular options 'Ultimate Member' and 'Members' which are more feature-rich, but I fear may impact the site speed.
So do the big name plugins tend to weigh a site down more than smaller niche plugins?
Definitely big plug-ins like memberships will slow down the Admin area of a WP site, but it depends on the front end, namely what components are being added to the page.
If you’re building a community site, you can set up a separate WP install on a subdomain, and use something like bbPress, that way it limits that resource to another site while still giving the appearance of being on the same domain.
It depends on the quality of code in the plugins. Look around the reviews and support threads of the plugins. Regardless of the plugin, you should enable persistent object caching and use hosting that is fast.
