I’m guessing I would have to move my featured images into content area rather than the page/post template for this to work.

There are a couple of approaches you could take. Moving the Featured Image block to the post content is definitely one of them, but here are a few more.
First, you could use the Location control to display the Featured Image block in the template based on specific posts or a category/taxonomy.
If you wanted to get a bit fancier, you could use the ACF control or the Metadata control. Create a custom field to “enable featured image” and set the Featured Image block in the template to be visible when this ACF field or custom field is set to true. Then on each page/post you would set the field to either true or false depending on when you wanted the image to display.
