I’ve not had a personal wordpress site for 10 years so I imagine things have moved on …
But assuming I’d want a cacheing plugin for occasional traffic spikes, I tried to install WP Super Cache but got this message: “The use of WP Super Cache can interfere with caching, which is automatically provided for this site. WP Super Cache has been deactivated”.
I’m on the creator plan with [wordpress.com](http://wordpress.com) hosting.
So … do I not need a cacheing plugin these days?

No, you don’t need a caching plugin with the [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com) creator plan. It already has extremely good caching built in as well as a CDN.
Additionally there’s automated burst scaling so if you get it a traffic spike that doesn’t hit the cache, it should still perform really well. Of course it’s not magic – if you’re Taylor Swift and you have just launched a new album you might need something bespoke, or if you have poorly coded plugins/themes, there’s only so much that can be done.
