I am trying to figure out if there is a way to get a website copied in a way so that it can then be updated separately from the main website. There is an intern in my department (government related) that wants to make a move into web development. We figure if we can copy the website and have him bring a new draft of it without having made changes to our existing website that would be a good way for him to have creative freedom as well as learn in a good deal in the process. I have tried googling this issue but I can’t quite figure it out as I am not very tech savvy. Would someone let me know if this is possible and if it is, provide a tutorial or a link to somewhere we could figure this out? I’m not quite sure if I’m explaining myself clearly here, so please feel free to ask clarifying questions.

Download a staging plugin. It can duplicate your site and you can work exclusively on the staging site
Yes, there are ways to create development/staging environments for projects. It sounds like you’re not on the technical side (no offense) so you might want to rely on a service to do this for you.
Something like might be good for you, since it would take care of most of the heavy lifting. But I haven’t been in the space for a while and you might get a better recommendation from someone else.
All you need to do is purchase updraft migrator plugin. You can migrate the site to a subdomain of the site like sandbox.yourcompanysite.com or whatever. He can work to his heart’s content and if you ever wanted that site live, you just backup your live site, save it to a drive and migrate his over to the production site, but I don’t recommend it.
