Can we get WordPress.org into the hands of the community?

As a self-hosted users for many years, it never occurred to me that WordPress.org is a quasi "charity" project by one person. With a ton of other open source projects (including ones I'm personally involved with), the website and repository-like features are usually hosted and driven by the community and paid for either through donations, a foundation or out of pocket from devs.

Given it's deep embedding into the source code and very likely with lots of pushback to make it more configurable, on top of potential trademark issue running a similar repository, it would make sense if the site was maintained and hosted by the community.

I see that in 2019 there was some effort to clarify the governance of WordPress in general, but it seems it essentially stopped that year as well. Does anyone know why and if there has been any outcome from this?

Yes, I've not contributed to WordPress myself, I mainly question how the community's "goods" – which I rely on as well – can or should be at the will of one person. If more people do have access to WordPress.org, why are they not speaking up? Why is everyone "okay" with one man holding the key to treasures of the community?
