Can you have multiple root domains/TLDs with WordPress Multisite?

I have a client with multiple websites and they want to keep them that way. I am researching CMSs to use and was wondering about WP Multisite. From the [documentation]), it seems this is intended to be used for subdomains and subdirectories only. Is this the case?

I did find a [plugin]) that was supposed to help with this but it seems to be depreciated and no longer maintained.

Anyway, I don’t want everything to point to one root site and then map to the other sites internally as I don’t want to dilute the domain authority for SEO. I would like to host each site with 1 WP installation if possible. If I cannot do this, would appreciate recommendations.

I am a WordPress noob and I am leaning towards [Sanity.io]) but want to be thorough in my research and someone suggested WP to me.
