When I try to set the nameservers, I get “Sorry, there was an error fetching the nameservers for [mydomainname]”.
When I try to contact support, no clicks produce any result; it seems completely dysfunctional.
I’d be grateful for any guidance, especially for the latter, which is surprising. Many thanks in advance.

Which host/registrar are you dealing with?
Are you talking about a website hosted on wordpress.com?
wordpress.com has support that answers questions in just a few minutes
WordPress.org has no support.
Who’s your hosting company?
Sounds like you’re using [wordpress.com]) <- unfortunately bad idea.
You should go with an actual hosting provider (BlueHost, SiteGround, etc) and then install [WordPress.**org**]) on it for best results.
[WordPress.com]) is a paid (and worse) version of regular wordpress that makes you pay to use the free built-in features of the real .org version.
