Cleaning up old sites

[ad_1]

I have a woocommerce store that I recently did a full non incremental backup on. I was astounded that there was over 500gb of data, the database itself was almost 14gb spanning 14 years.

Most of this data seems to be lots of pictures/documents/manuals etc of products which have long been deleted.

Is there a reliable way to automatically scan the site/media gallery for non linked files and delete them? Iirc I tried this years ago on a staging site and it removed a lot of the full-size images etc so when you clicked on an image it would either be missing or scaled up the thumbnail.

Is there a more reliable method? Sadly a quite a lot of the *current* products/guides/articles do span that far back so I can’t for example delete entire folder years.

Not in my experience – I’ve tried most of them, inc paid plugins like [https://meowapps.com/products/media-cleaner-pro/](https://meowapps.com/products/media-cleaner-pro/) – all of them cleaned files that were being used.

For big jobs, it might be easier and cleaner to rebuild.
