Comments closing and not emailing

[ad_1]

It’s only my personal blog so not high volume visitors or content churn but… There are two issues that have started in the last couple of weeks.

Comments are set to close after 21 days, but they’re closing after a day. And the blog has stopped emailing (new comment received, forgotten password, etc). Anyone seen these two odd behaviours before? Tia.

  1. You likely need to install an SMTP plugin to route emails through a mail server if the emails have stopped working. I’ve recently started using Fluent SMTP, which seems pretty good.

With regards to comments, I just turn them off, so wouldn’t be able to help with that one. I don’t think I’ve used comments in about 10 years.

  2. The big email services (gmail, that lot) tightened up their authentication requirements for incoming SMTP messages at the end of April. Because spammers and phishers. Is it possible you need to add something to your DNS? Check with your email service provider to see if you need to do something.

[DMARC](https://support.google.com/a/answer/2466563?hl=en) records if I remember right. I added them to the sites I support in something of a hurry.

I dunno about the comment-closing thing. Try changing it in settings, then changing it back.
