Comparing WordPress plans and Wix

[ad_1]

Hey y’all, I’ll try to keep it as brief as possible, as I’m sure many people have asked similar questions, I just couldn’t find the exact answer to this one. I’m a motion graphic designer with only a little HTML experience, so when it came time to make a portfolio site to show off my work with, I had made it on Wix by default. However, as the renewal for my plan came around, I was reminded how expensive Wix was (at $16/month) without the initial half off discount I had gotten 2 years ago, and after wrangling a refund from them I’ve been in search of a different, less expensive place to build my portfolio website on.

I was immediately told about and drawn to [Wordpress.com]), and I’m willing to put some work in to learning a less intuitive website builder if it means it will be less expensive, so I got the $8/month Personal plan and got to work. However, my work was quickly stopped when I realized that I’d need to upgrade to the $12/month Premium plan to change any of the default settings of the templates (at least, as far as I can tell), and I couldn’t install any of the helpful plugins shown in Youtube videos. Now, $12/month is still cheaper than Wix’s $16/month (and with more storage space), but it does entice me a bit less.

Then I educated myself on the difference with [Wordpress.org]), and realized that maybe that was what I needed, as I’d only need to pay for the hosting, and I’d have access to all the template tweaks and plugins that I wanted. However, upon watching a Youtube video where I was told that “Anything under $50/month for website hosting is a good deal”, which is obviously way more than just building and having my site hosted on [Wordpress.com]) or Wix, I’m left asking this Subreddit: *for someone who is fine with the customizability of Wix but is just looking for the best deal money-wise for building my portfolio site, will upgrading to the $12/month Premium plan solve my issues, or am I better off just sticking with Wix? Or am I just missing something about the functionality of the $8/month personal plan/missing how hosting my own site isn’t actually the worse deal than the others (for me) that I think it is?*

If anyone could help me with any of these questions I’d be so incredibly thankful, again I hope that these questions aren’t too obvious, I’ve just been so confused by the world of website builders for the past couple weeks lol.
