Complete switch off “Load Google Fonts locally”

I first installed the plugin “Local Google Fonts”. Worked without problems.

Then I discovered the option “Load Google Fonts locally” in Syndey. I uninstalled the plugin and enabled the option in Syndey. Then I discovered that Sydney doesn’t handle the Google fonts definied in Elementor.

So I tried to go back: Disable the option in Sydney again and reinstall the plugin. Doesn’t work, the plugin suddenly reports multiple errors.

I did some research and found that the folder /wp-content/fonts still exists after I disabled the option in Sydney! Also there is still a database record (in options) “downloaded_font_files” with references to the files in /wp-content/fonts in the format

Note the double slash in …wp-content//fonts… Why?

How do I ensure that Sydney does not touch anything concerning Google fonts after I disable the option with Customizer?
