I am very much an amateur so please feel free to speak to me like I am a five year old haha
I am trying to create a directory of professionals where you can filter base on a few different preferences and see who is a match. This feature would be the entirety of the purpose of the site. Best way to go about doing this?

You can use “Advanced Custom Fields” plugin to create Custom Post Type, lets say “Professionals” and then create a taxonomies for this post type and use the taxonomies for filtering through the Professionals Post Type.
There are so many ways to implement this feature. It really depends on size because based on size, I could be more of help. However a clear and sure proof way, is to use GeoDirectory. It is a plugin for such purposes and one of thebetter ones out there.
If you wanted the directory in a table, you can use WPDatatables and it is a very powerful plugin for creating advanced tables with advanced filtering. They even sell an addon to their filtering captabilities.
While ACF and customs post types etc. are a way to do this if you don’t have much experience you might get a tad overwhelmed. If you are persistent and willing to put some time and effort to learn and execute I’m sure you can pull it off.
But the easier option if you don’t have that kind of time to dedicate would be to just grab a directory listing theme. Get on Themeforest and do a search for Directory theme you should find plenty.
Listeo is a great option for any director site and comes preloaded with all the flustered you could need to get up and running.
