We do have a wordpress website a the moment.
However, now I would like to redesign the site and start completely from scratch. But how can I do that in WP dashboard?
Is it possible to ‘hide’ the new site while designing it – and still have the ‘old’ site showing while working on the new one?

So your best option will be to create a staging website. Depending on your hosting account, they might allow for a staging site to be easily created. Basically you’ll be creating a 2nd website to build out your design, and once finished, you’ll migrate the design to the old website and overwrite the previous setup.
You can install the WordPress on a subdomain for your new site design. Once you finish, move the new design to the live site.
