I’m currently reworking a website for someone and wanted to make a website that is a sample of what I want to do before applying it to the WordPress website. My question would be about possibly making that site without changing what the current website looks like. Is there a way I could back up the current website incase the owner doesn’t like the changes maybe?
I essentially want to build the website from the ground up as it’s pretty outdated but I am mainly worried about making too many changes that the owner doesn’t want. It’s for a wildlife sanctuary and I’m doing it as a volunteer so I want to make sure it is done well and looks as professional as possible.
I also wanted to use plug ins but don’t want to install any that would immediately impact the site.

Create a staging site. See if your host lets you create one, most of them do. Then when you are happy with how the staging site looks, you just deploy to the real site and it updates.
Look into [LocalWP](https://localwp.com/). You can backup and export the site as a ZIP file, make all the changes necessary using Local on a locally hosted site, and then deploy the changes once you’ve tested and it all works. This will keep your live site intact while making (potentially breaking) changes.
