Default Featured Image by page and custom post/categories

[ad_1]

I am a novice building out a new site as a volunteer for a non-profit org with the latest WP version and the 2024 theme. I’ve generally been able to format the theme how I’d like — mainly the header and footer — however there is one thing I would like an idea of how to tackle.

In the header, I’m using a cover image block to show the featured image. In the likely scenario that no image is provided when someone adds new content, I’d like to show a default image. However, ideally I want that default image would be the same for all pages, but different for the two custom post pages (News, Articles) — and even better to set a different default image for each post category.

So, for example all site pages would have a default image 1. However in the ‘News’ custom post we might have a category for ‘Project Updates’ (which would have a default as image 2) and ‘Board Updates’ (with default as image 3) In the ‘Articles’ posts, we might have the categories ‘Flora’ and ‘Fauna’ with default images of 4 and 5 respectively.

The goal is that if someone forgets or doesn’t have a feature image, the default image is still more precisely relevant to the topic.

I’m assuming I’m needing a plugin to do this? Any recommendations?
