Hello.
I’m a developer so my sister figured I could make her new WP site, because Jimdo doesn’t do it anymore for her.
I’ve never worked with WP or web hosting services, so I have a basic question:
We want to keep the current domain, and want the old site to stay online until the new site is done.
It seems to me that I immediately need a domain when signing up on a hosting service and install WP. How can I develop the site on our chosen hosting service, and transfer the domain when the site is completed?
Thank you!
edit:
I’ll re-phrase it.
The old site is on Jimdo, there’s hosting included. So no sub-domains.
The new hosting service forces me to either register a new domain for free for the first year, or to transfer a domain.
I don’t know if I should:
1. Register a random domain until development is done, and then transfer the old domain.
2. Choose ‘transfer domain’, but not unlocking it on Jimdo until development is done. (Is it even possible to develop on a not transfered domain on the new hosting service? )
edit 2: I’ll write a ticket to the hosting service, asking how to handle it. Oh god that’s why I always avoided WP

Most hosts will give you a test domain to use if you haven’t sorted out your domain. Or setup a subdomain for developing your new site.
You can always choose “i have a domain name” option. That just let’s you create an account where you can install your WordPress without buying a new domain.
You can insert you current domain name in the field. At the most it’ll ask you to switch the nameservers of your current domain to point at the new hosting plan.
