I'm trying to create a website using WordPress but before I pay for the subscription I would like to know if I need a tax id/ VAT no. To incorporate a payment gateway into my website?
Because I have neither of those nor a registered business.
I can only speak for the US because that’s what I’m familiar with, but I assume it’s the same where you are. It’s perfectly acceptable for any individual to set up a payment gateway. Here, we would use our Social Security Number as identification when setting up Stripe or some other provider for that purpose.
First. Don’t pay WordPress.com. Make sure you’re using WordPress.org for free and then find a host that’s a few dollars a month.
Second. Depending on your country you can use gateways like stripe as a sole proprietor. You will just need whatever identification method is used in your country. And you’ll need some bank statement or something for proof address.
If you’re in the EU you should definitely get a VAT number as well. It will save you a lot of headaches later.
