Domain Transfer

[ad_1]

Question! I need to transfer an existing domain name that is currently in use with an old website to a new wordpress website that was recently built.
The domain name is in namecheap and the new wordpress website is hosted in Digital ocean.
Can someone give me instructions how to transfer the existing and currently in use Domain name to the new wordpress website hosted on digital ocean?
Will the old website that currently has the domain just disappear?

  1. You’ve got this! Moving your domain from Namecheap to your new WordPress site on DigitalOcean is simpler than it sounds. Basically, you’ll need to point the domain to your new hosting by updating the nameservers and DNS settings in Namecheap. Once that’s done, your old site won’t be accessible through the domain anymore — it’s like handing the keys from your old place to your new one. Just make sure you’ve backed up everything from the old site first, and give it a bit of time to switch over. Your new site should be up and running on the domain in no time!

  2. A domain name is just a “pointer” that inform visitor to go ABC server (where your website is hosted), and all of this is controlled by DNS records.

You would only need to update DNS records inside your Namecheap DNS manager and point your DNS records to your newly built DigitalOcean server.

  3. I would recommend reading up on DNS more and name servers in particular more. Because the answer is there are two different ways to do this sort of thing, and they have different implications.

The first way is to change the name server records to digital ocean. You would make this change on namecheap. The second way is to change the DNS records on namecheap to point to these servers at digital ocean. The second way is slightly faster in that it has less downtime involved. However, the first way is what most hosting services recommend, because it’s much easier for you.

Which way you do it depends on where you want the name servers to live, and how much control you have over the individual name server records. Personally, I prefer to control my name servers myself, and I do that on my domain provider. However, changing just the nameserver records to point to the hosting provider is definitely easier. Which way you do it, is up to you.
