Easiest way to move a new website design into production?

[ad_1]

I run a business centered around a content website built on WordPress. We post approx 4 posts per day and get between 600k and 1m visitors per month.

I want to hire someone to redesign the site and put it on Generate Press as the current theme (Colormag) has been a hindrance when we’ve tried to hire people to do certain upgrades, plus they recently issued an update where they changed all of the CSS names (for divs, classes etc) and it really messed everything up.

When I’ve hired people in the past to make cosmetic updates, they’ve made the changes in a staging copy (we’re on Cloudways) and then pushed the staging copy to prod once we’d added all the new content over.

I would expect a full redesign will take some time, and we’ll end up creating two copies of all of our posts for at least a week or more – which is a lot of room for error, especially when you factor in internal linking etc.

My question is this: Is there an easier way to push a new GeneratePress theme into Prod? Is there some functionality I’m aware of that would allow us to save the new design as a “theme” in the staging copy, load that into prod and just switch over?

Sub-question to that: I know some people who have taken massive traffic hits with a new design (generally temporary, but anywhere from a week to months). I’ve tried to get an idea of what could cause this, and it seems it’s mainly they mess with the SLUG format – is this all we’d need to look out for? Other than the whole site being noindexed or similar.
