Empty template: Pages issue

[ad_1]

Hey, new to WordPress here – I'm running into a problem with editing templates and I can't find a similar situation to mine.

I have a basic website structure set up, with a few pages linked to a navigation bar in the header. No plugins yet, I haven't subbed to a plan. When I edit the footer template and save my changes, I get a popup to pick a template from a single Archive page option. Afterwards:

  • White screen with just the text "Empty template: Pages" when visiting the site from both the dashboard and the editor at any page
  • All of the pages become a blank "Archive title" template with the changes to the footer template I made intact
  • The original pages I had are still intact through the dashboard>All Pages but the header and footer aren't visible

I've tried logging out and clearing my caches, that didn't work. I tried switching templates (between Assembler and 2024) and it fixed the problem, but I ran into it again after saving changes to the template. Soo I'm wondering if I'm breaking some rule against editing templates? Beyond using the editor I don't know much about WordPress yet, so any thoughts or advice would be really really appreciated 🙂
