Error username and email already exist

I’m trying to add a new user (subscriber) to my WordPress website. For some reason I’m getting an error that their username and email already exist and it will not add them. However, when I go to my list of users, they are not listed anywhere. Any idea what is happening and how to fix this (without asking them to use a different email address/username)?
