first wordpress based site

  1. can I not put in a tag to return to the last page (not PREVIOUS or NEXT)????
  2. I have created a pattern but every time I add it into a page I have to 'undock' it to add content. What is the point on having a template or pattern if you can't change the content inside it ad hoc per page? Am I missing something, or is this genuinely as useless as it seems?
  3. I need page navigation, and it must include all pages, but must NOT include the page it is currently on, how does wordpress account for this?
