Frustrated with using block editor when trying out WordPress.com for the first time, am torn between putting in the work to understand wordpress.org or spending money on a premium theme to see if that helps

Hey all this is a somewhat generic newbie post but google search results and tutorials for these non-programmer development tools are destroyed by SEO spam so it’s difficult to get a clear answer. I’ve started using the free version of [wordpress.com]) to see if the tool would be a good fit for me and while I appreciate some aspects of it, it seems to arbitarily link fields when making pages or it does other technically baffling things like I can’t figure out how to edit my headers and footers and if I try to add them as blocks it just crashes my webpage for instance.

So at this current impasse, would anyone recommend paying the subscription fee to get premium themes included in the hope that they’ll be designed in a functional manner that wont’ require me to learn the entire web developer side of this. Or is it better to start learning enough web development to get a barebones blog going by myself to host either through [wordpress.org]) or elsewhere? And in both cases are their good recommendations to tutorials to familiarize myself with all this? I see that promotion and premium theme advice is touchy here so I’ll refrain on those questions for now

  1. Why do you think you need to learn web development to use WordPress.org instead? Never touched the .com side, but there’s a ton of hosting sites that setup everything up for you more or less. Unless you’re doing some particularly custom stuff, you don’t need to code anything. For the most part “there’s probably a plugin for that”. I usually build custom sites myself and only recently got into WordPress for a job prospect, but in my experience it’s all been drag and drop and installing plugins.
