In WordPress pretty much you are really discouraged from having a video Hero image, even when you use special plugins such as Smart Slider 3 that are designed for this type of thing. It really is not the best idea.
Now, when you have probably a Billion people hitting it by now each day.
But then again, I use a $20 SITEGROUND hosting plan per month, it must be nice to have billions of dollars available in funding so you don’t have to worry about the scaling implications and its performance impact.

Open AI are probably not trying to optimize for the same things as you
This isn’t a WordPress issue. This would fall under UI/UX, performance and design.
That said, you can use video as a hero or full size background if you know how to optimize for it, from video optimization to presentation and hosting.
Goes a bit beyond the average wp developers skillset since simply having a video served by the same server will result in terrible FCP and google labelling your page as problematic. What you need is a media CDN, not to mention having the correct video formatting and res.
A custom media cdn get expensive fast and doesn’t really make practical sense for the average company. Since openai is developing text to video they probably developed an ultra fast CDN system necessary for it (or currently are).
Edit: also it loads a picture first before the video which lagged heavy for me, so not that great in my region. Google says the performance is terrible. If openai was a new company trying to rank, they wouldn’t have done it.
I’ve never seen a hero video on OpenAI’s website. Which page are you looking at?
I’m not sure why you’d think this is a problem? You can certainly use a video on the hero section as long as you know how to optimize it.
The number of hits isn’t going to be a problem.
It is because the regular wordpress user does not understand why a 25mb video slider is a problem. Nor do they know how to optimize.
Do you offer services needed by millions of people around the world? Services so needed that even in a case of a bad loading website there would be a minimal bounce rate?
Do you think they pay $20/month for hosting? Also, hosting price really doesn’t equal quality (sadly)
The bottom line is, like everybody else already pointed out, this is unrelated to WordPress
